Good Web content for schools

Developing high quality content is the key to creating an effective school Web site. Here is a list of many good ideas for a school Web site with links to sample pages showing how various districts have implemented these ideas:

Good web content

Sample pages

Latest news: The Web is a quick way to broadcast the latest news from your school district. There's no delay, and there's no printing and postage costs. It also keeps your Web site fresh!

www.albanyschools.org
www.gasd.org
www.mohonasen.org
Fast Faqs: The Q&A format is an ideal way to provide basic information about your district. This can be particularly helpful to prospective homebuyers.
Virtual photo tours: Add life to your school Web site by taking your viewers on a virtual photo tour of your classrooms or special events. www.bocescareertech.org
www.mohonasen.org
On-line newsletters: Rather than send out the traditional paper newsletter, why not create an electronic newsletter for those audiences that have e-mail and Internet access.
Feedback: The Web is a good place to get feedback from your community members. www.rcscsd.org
www.bocescareertech.org
School closings: School closings and early dismissals can quickly be broadcast out over the Web. A parent who is at work and can't get to a radio or TV but has a computer would be especially grateful for this feature.  www.shenet.org
Attendance zones & bus schedules: Where would my child attend schools? How would he or she get there? These are some very basic questions that new homebuyers and new parents within your district would be happy to find on your Web site.  www.albanyschools.org
www.guilderlandschools.org

Alumni pages: Among the most likely visitors to your Web site will be graduates from years gone by. An alumni page, where they can register, check out what fellow grads are doing and get the latest information on class reunions is a real service to your graduates. bcsd.k12.ny.us
www.guilderlandschools.org
Sports schedules & scores: Sports schedules (and all other sports information) will be well received not only by students and parents but also by the community at large.  bcsd.k12.ny.us
Lunch menus: A great hit with parents and students will be easy-to-access lunch menus. You can also provide information on and downloadable applications for free and reduced-price lunches. www.albanyschools.org
Job openings: What better service to your community than to provide a list of job openings in your school district via the Web.  www.guilderlandschools.org
www.albanyschools.org
Calendars: Even though you may print and send out a school calendar, the Web is a good place to offer a calendar that reflects frequent updates. www.shenet.org
www.guilderlandschools.org
Publications & forms: The Web is a good place to provide easy access to district publications, as well as all kinds of forms, ranging from student registration to job application. www.guilderlandschools.org
www.bhbl.org
www.niskayunaschools.org
Staff directories: Make it easy for people in your community to find who they are looking for. This can be done in the form of a simple listing, or it could be presented through a searchable database. www.guilderlandschools.org
www.capregboces.org

Teacher & department pages: The Web is a great vehicle for individual teachers or whole departments to provide all kinds of information to parents and students. www.schalmont.org
www.mohonasen.org

Guidance information: At the secondary level, the guidance office is often the key point of entry for parents - i.e., the place to start when you are looking for help or information. The same could be said for a top-quality school guidance Web site.   www.guilderlandschools.org
www.mohonasen.org

Email registration for parents: This feature allows parents to register to receive emails from the district on the latest news and events. www.rcscsd.org
